Southern Alligator Lizard

I saw this 10-inch long Southern alligator lizard (Elgaria multicarinata) while riding up a rural/suburban lane in Woodside tonight. It was hard to get him off the road as he kept trying to hide under my shoe. I finally picked him up and put him in the grass.

Any chance the alligator lizard tried biting? I find they're prone to nipping.
They are a bit nippy. I usually grab them behind the head. I don't grab their tails as they easily break.
nice photos.. am wondering how do you get them to stay still ?
